  • Fantomele Sportului - istoria bazei Chefalul (sau Keoke) unde acum e un ansamblu imobiliar neterminat si multe alte detalii despre hatisul legislativ si administrativ care a facut ca multe baze sportive sa dispara;
  • Afacerea Baza Sportiva Cutezatorii (actuala Pescariu) - afacere inca in desfasurare sub obladuirea Ministerului Educatiei (de la Androneasca in 2003 la epigonii ei de azi);
  • Afacerea Baza Sportiva Vointa (in spatele statiei de metrou Aurel Vlaicu) - baza i-a fost data in 1999 lui Ilie Nastase pentru a face acolo o academie de tenis, ceea ce nu s-a intamplat nici pana in ziua de azi, 15 ani mai tarziu; ca sa avem o perspectiva temporala sa ne gandim ca prin '98-'99 Simona se apucase probabil sa joace tenis;
  • Afacerea Baza Sportiva Spartac - despre cum s-a cerut retrocedarea a cateva sute de hectare in sectorul 3 si s-au retrocedat tot felul de terenuri, de la baza sportiva Spartac pana la o bucata din parcul IOR; acum pe locul fostei baze sportive se construieste un mall;

Mult succes, Simona!

More good music and good tennis

It seems the year started well for my stumble on music discovery, cause I found another cool band, this time on the monitors from Hard-Rock Cafe in Bucharest. Silversun Pickups produced 3 LPs so far, but they are still in the phase of opening concerts for other bands (like Muse or Placebo).

On the other hand, the first grand slam of the year in Australia produced an epic match between Djokovic and Wawrinka. Below is the match point after 5 hours of play, one of the most beautiful match points I ever saw:

Blame it on the rackets

What do you do when you win a set?, you celebrate, isn't it? What about when losing one? It appears that you can always blame it on the racket as both Djokovic and Murray did it yesterday in the final of the Shanghai Master (see the video below). Or maybe they were just angry that no matter who would had won Federer would still be number one, for the 300th week. I hope that Head is happy now, they will just sell them two additional rackets :)

The tennis connection

I'm watching the men's final at Indian Wells masters series tournament between Nadal and Djokovic. After a disputed point the TV camera turned to a cheering spectator, Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle, who happens to be the owner of the tournament since a few years ago. Is this some business intelligence in a relational database or something? :)

P.S. Vamos Rafa!

Horse jumping contest

Last weekend I went to an interesting event: a horse jumping contest at Hipocan club in Corbeanca, near Bucharest. I occasionally saw this type of event at TV, but it was the first time I saw a live contest. It was very nice to see all those horses, although the weather was rather chilly. I didn't have a camera to take photos, but I found some from this event on another blog here.

The phenomenom called Phelps

Michael Phelps is probably the greatest swimmer of all times. So far he won five gold medals at Beijing Olympics, all of them with world records and he is on track to win eight gold medals, which nobody ever did.
The number of world records at natation in this Olympics is huge. I know there is a new swim suit designed by Speedo and NASA that helps a lot, but still, aren't we seeing a little bit of cyclism here?

Well done Nadal and Spain!

This is the year of Spanish sport. After Spain won the European Cup at football after 44 years, tonight Rafa Nadal is the first Spanish tennis man to win the Wimbledon in 42 years. Both the Spanish football team and Nadal won in style, playing superb matches. Felicitaciones a ambos.

Update: that does not diminish the merits of Federer, this final was the best tennis match I saw since I started watching this sport. Both Federer and Nadal are great players, it's a pleasure to watch them.

Tennis

I started (after a pause of two years) playing tennis with some of my colleagues. We're not that good at it, but after two sessions I can see we improved our play. And the team building is also good :) Last weekend I also went to see the semi-finals and the final of the Romanian Open, which was cool. There was also a demonstrative match between Monica Seles and Martina Navratilova.

Soccer, or football as it is called in Europe.

People in Romania are very passionate about this game, and it just felt good when we demolished Germany a couple of days ago. Romania-Germany 5-1! The team was just greate.
